Easy Sesame Shrimp with Sweet Peas

Skip the pre-made stir-fry bags at the grocery store with their funny tasting sauces, and cook up a healthy and delicious homemade stir-fry with just a couple of ingredients from the freezer – like jumbo shrimp and sweet peas.

Along with a few Asian sauces and spices from your pantry, you’ll have this Easy Sesame Shrimp with Sweet Peas prepped, cooked, and on the table before anyone can ask, “What’s for dinner?”

I always have a couple of bags of frozen shrimp and frozen veggies stocked up for whenever I run out of fresh ingredients for stir-fries in the middle of winter.  Just a quick run over with cold water, and they’re ready to cook up for a quick dinner with rice.

The light sauce for this Easy Sesame Shrimp with Sweet Peas is made with garlic infused oil, and just a few splashes of mirin (Japanese sweet sake) and toasted sesame oil.  A simple combination that adds a rich, tantalizing aroma and flavor to the dish.  Try the delectable pairing of mirin & toasted sesame oil in some of your other favorite homemade stir-fries as well.

For the seasoning, dash on some white pepper before cooking the shrimp. And then once the dish is ready, generously sprinkle on our Japanese Sesame Seasoning – a crunchy blend of toasted & black sesame seeds, wildcrafted nori flakes, Himalayan pink salt, and Aleppo chili flakes.

If you have time, cook up a side of sautéed greens to go along with this Easy Sesame Shrimp with Sweet Peas.  But if you come home late, like I did when I made this dish, then just enjoy it with a bowl of white or brown rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb jumbo raw shrimp – peeled and deveined if not already
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch optional
  • Dashes of white pepper
  • 3-4 garlic cloves – finely chopped
  • 3/4 cup sweet peas
  • One or two splashes of mirin or dry sherry*
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1.5 tablespoon Season with Spice’s Japanese Sesame Seasoning or to taste

Instructions

  • Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels and place in a shallow baking dish. Add in the cornstarch and white pepper and toss to coat evenly.
  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high fire. When oil is heated, add in the shrimp – the shrimp should sizzle on contact with the skillet.
  • Let sear on one side for about 1-2 minutes before turning over to cook for another minute or two. Scoop out shrimp and set aside in a bowl.
  • Turn fire down to medium, and add in 1 tbsp of oil. Then add in the chopped garlic. Stir and cook the garlic until aromatic, about 30-40 seconds. Then add in the sweet peas. Give it a few stirs.
  • Turn heat to high, add the cooked shrimp back in, and one or two splashes of mirin or dry sherry. Stir everything together to coat evenly with the garlic-infused oil.
  • Finally, add in toasted sesame oil. Dish out onto your serving platter. Sprinkle the dish with our Japanese Sesame Seasoning. Enjoy with steamed rice or your choice of grain.

Notes

* If you do not have any mirin or dry sherry at home, you can replace it with either broth or rice wine. You just want to create a light sauce for the dish.
